Goodbye, old friend

After an 86-year run, the North Central Conference closed its doors with a June 21 banquet to celebrate the league’s storied past. The festivities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, included NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw narrating a historical video, and acknowledgement of the four living commissioners in NCC history.

The NCC, formed in 1921 as the “Big 9,” became one of the top conferences for athletics competition and was a power in NCAA Division II. The league won 47 NCAA team titles, and 235 NCC student-athletes won 332 NCAA individual crowns. But a series of reclassifications in recent years ended the league, as four schools opted to reclassify their athletics programs to Division I and four others moved to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
