NEW MEDIA
Get on the same Web page

If your idea of “MySpace” is a place to catch a few moments of personal time and “YouTube” is a descriptor for the relationship you have with your flatscreen, it’s time to upgrade from dial-up service.

In the 1990s, letters to the editor were generally the only means of sharing opinions through the media. Now, however, Generation Y is quickly becoming Generation Z, and “blog” is now a word in the dictionary instead of a newborn Klingon.

A hundred thousand new blogs pop up on the Web every day, and while Britney, Lindsay and Paris dominate many of them, intercollegiate athletics is also a popular topic among the millions of passionate fans conversing online.

Traditional media outlets have a finite number of pages, or minutes of airtime, to devote to college sports, and many important stories don’t always find a buyer. With the advent of blogs and podcasts, there is now a home for content of all shapes and sizes.

So throw away the typewriter, treat yourself to a chrome keyboard and start blogging. There’s a new way to keep up with your favorite teams.

HBCU Sports Blog

URL: hbcusportsblog.com

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Developed by Jarrett Carter, a graduate of Morgan State, the HBCU Sports Blog highlights programs and student-athletes at historically black colleges and universities. While traditional media generally focus on the rivalries between Texas and Oklahoma, Ohio State and Michigan, and North Carolina and Duke, the HBCU Sports Blog highlights Grambling-Southern, Howard-Hampton and Morgan State-Delaware State. It is quickly becoming a destination for college sports fans.

FROM THE DEVELOPER: “My immediate goals are to increase awareness of the tradition and quality of competition at historically black colleges and universities. As a graduate of a historically black college, it’s part of my duty as a sports fan and journalist to capture the essence and energy of competition within the historically black conferences.” – Jarrett Carter

Centennial Conference Blog

URL: centennialconference.blogspot.com

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: In addition to his administrative duties as commissioner of the Centennial Conference, Steve Ulrich also spends much of his time blogging about conference happenings. A Division III league, the Centennial has 11 members located in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Ulrich regularly provides game updates and highlights academic and community-service achievements of studentathletes.

FROM THE DEVELOPER: “It’s all about communicating with those who are passionate about smallcollege athletics and the Centennial Conference in particular. If a parent can read more about their son’s or daughter’s athletics and academic accomplishments, that’s a benefit to the Centennial membership. If an alum can stay in touch with the alma mater because of the Web site or blog, it’s a benefit.” – Steve Ulrich
